Background: Dave has always had an affinity with vehicles since he was very young having been trained by hanging around the docks as a kid driving loading vehicles and on very exciting occasions being allowed first to ride along and then pilot shuttle to space dock flights by the dock crews who loved having him around. As his ability to fly and drive like nobody else grew he considered joining the military but quickly realized that their ordered lifestyle wouldn't work for him and took the natural alternative that would allow him to fly without order - Smuggling. Dave quickly built up a good reputation as a smuggler as he tested himself further and further by taking on more daring and crazy jobs until one day he came to the attention of crime lord Habber the Jut. Habber's operations spanned many worlds and the job he gave Dave was just too tough. Before being boarded and almost imprisoned Dave was forced to jettison his cargo (a tank of little critters who although an endangered species were a favorite delicacy of the Jut's) behind a nearby asteroid. 

Although he escaped from the law Dave now had to face retribution from Habber's people. Hiding out on a remote desert world Dave though his luck had changed when he was approached by an old and man young boy looking for passage. They were so desperate they were prepared to offer an enormous sum to avoid any "entanglements" with the security forces. Dave took the job but quickly things went badly as firstly he had to run a security blockade and when finally arriving at their destination was captured by an enormous space station. Through Dave's daring not only did everybody escape (well except the old man but you have to accept some losses don't you?) but also Dave managed to rescue a princess (who clearly had the hots for him). Through amazing piloting he got everybody back to a hidden rebel base where they wanted him to help attack the space station. This was clearly suicide and Dave refused. 

However, as he left he had feeling of remorse as it was clear he was going to get lucky with the princess if he helped and by now the rebels had probably done most of the hard work and so he headed back. Bad idea! Just as he arrived the rebels completed their attack and his ship was caught in the blast as the station exploded. His ship was disabled by the blast and just as was starting repairs his ship was stuck again by an experimental fighter craft that against all odds had also survived the explosion at the station and both ships were destroyed. Dave managed to get into a life capsule in time and luckily for him was rescued by his old friend Kelp who, knowing him, was probably in the area looking for salvage. Kelp told Dave where he'd be hanging out and gave Dave funds to get a ticket there on a transport.

Saddened by the loss of his ship, which he loved more than any woman, Dave headed out to see Kelp on the asteroid base determine to rebuild a new ship and make it the best in the galaxy.
