Advice On Breaking In An Adult RPG Noob

March 18, 2011 By: John Taber Category: Games, Growlings

NoobI’m excited that soon I will get the opportunity to instruct a new soul on my favorite hobby. Having this opportunity got me thinking. Stand back please! 😀

Over the years I have had the opportunity to instruct many people on role-playing. I’ve taught adults and children. I’ve done sessions for new players, experienced players, and people trying to learn a particular RPG system. These sessions have been conducted in homes, stores, and conventions. Even though I have done this instruction in the past it has been quite a while.

With that in mind give me your best response to this question…

What is your best piece of advice when breaking in RPG noobs?

  1. Tim replied with this on my Facebook cross post:

I really love that picture John, where’d you find it? I think the most important thing in bringing a new player into an RPG is to be patient. The noob has likely never seen or been exposed to an RPG and it will be a totally new experience… for them. The next thing I think is important is to use lots of examples of more mainstream entertainment that have RPG elements in them and then draw parallels to help show the noob how they are similar. For example, “Playing an RPG is very similar to making a movie. The GM is similar to the director and the players are similar to the actors. The difference is that the GM provides a “Script outline” and then the GM and players working together provide the dialog and actions in order to tell their collective story.
