Make Your Own RPG Dice Keychain!

December 18, 2007 By: John Taber Category: Games, Growlings

My current keychain is getting old so I decided I wanted one with an RPG dice on it.? After looking around the web I found a site that had some details on making your own.? The site is in a blog by Cory.? I used his guidance to come up with three keychains of my own.? Here is what I learned.

Supplies

  • Dice
  • Variable Speed Drill
  • Drill Bit – 5/64″
  • Eye Hooks – I went to Orchard Supply Hardware and bought Screw Eyes (Small) 11/16″ (part number 9040106) for $0.59.
  • Epoxy

Instructions

  1. Measure the depth of the hole you will need.? Make sure the hole covers all of the thread exposing only very little of the bar.
  2. Mark the drill bit with tape so you drill to the correct depth.
  3. Set the drill to a low speed.? I used setting 2 on my drill which has 24 speed settings.? Go carefully as the dice may try to spin out of your hands.? Also dice are very brittle and will crack easily.
  4. Drill the hole in any number.? I found that 8 is a good number to drill as the center of the 8 acts as a guide for the bit.
  5. Put a dab of epoxy on the threads of the eye hook and place them into the hole.? With these settings the eye hook should actually slide in without binding.? I found that this works better after breaking a few dice trying to thread them.? 😉
  6. Let dry.
  7. That’s it!? 😀

12 To Midnight Charity Auction For Autism

December 05, 2007 By: John Taber Category: Games, Growlings

I wanted to hype the great charity event that the folks at 12 To Midnight are having for autism research. For those of you who read this that and have not heard, my oldest son Joshua, was recently diagnosed with autism. It has meant a complete upheaval in everything related to his childhood and our family. Thus I have a personal vested interest in this research. Please be go to the site and see how you can help. This company puts out great products so don’t hesitate to buy something even if it is small. I love their maps so I bought more map packs. 😉

I love it when a plan comes together!

On Monday night (07/23/07) I wrapped up my Star Aria space opera campaign.? (It was a Star Hero based campaign that I started over 3 years ago.)? The last session was an absolute blast!? The PC end up saving the universe by defeating an ancient alien menace known as Ankmil.? He was from a long forgotten race known as the Patriarchs.? Ankmil had been pestering the PCs since the start of the campaign.? Not only was the last session climactic but we talked about the campaign afterwards and it was a great learning experience for everyone.? My players were good about letting me know what they liked and did not like.

I’m trying a couple of interesting things to wrap up the campaign with a bang.? One of the things I am doing is having each of the players write a couple of paragraphs about what their character is doing after the last session.? I encouraged them to add any elements from the campaign that they want to use.? It should be really fun to read their stories.? I also plan to post these on the Star Aria site.? See the link on the left.
Another thing that I plan to do is to update the Star Aria site with the final versions of their characters and the logs.? This should make a great read for anyone who want to take a look.

My next campaign…Terra Incognito: Ancient Mysteries…watch this space for details!? 😀
