November 08, 2013 By: John Taber Category: Daring Tales Of Adventure News, Games

Ti-Lung - Talon Of Lo-Peng[Author’s Note: This is the log for the 8th session. Note that the order of the events in this record may not be in the exact order that they occurred during play. The narrator is shown in italics.]

In this hair-raising adventure of Tesla’s Power Corp you can follow the exploits of the following heroes:

  • Mike Callahan – Tough private-eye with a zest for life.
  • Johnny Kelly – Self-taught mechanic and chemist who knows he is the best at what he does…just ask him!
  • Tommy Kelly – Teen thief with a “Robin Hood” complex.
  • Miles Ravenwood – Mysterious man-of-means with knowledge in all things arcane.

Ghosts Of The Past

After getting some coffee the Corp members head to the Metropolitan Museum to see why Trubee Davison, the curator, needs their help so early on a Sunday morning. When they arrive Trubee leads them into the Chinese Wing of the museum. There the group finds a police investigation in process. According the Trubee there was a break-in at the museum. The thieves not only took a jade artifact but also killed one of the museum security guards. After speaking briefly with a police detective Trubee asks the group to investigate the scene. Miles and Mike start by examining the body of the guard. The guard has been smashed in the head and right shoulder by something about the size of a basketball. At his side was his revolver with two shots discharged. Mike finds one shot in the wall and makes a supposition that the guard could have hit his attacker with the other shot. On the hand of the victim Miles finds a freshly burned scar. The scar is a Chinese character over three lightning bolts that converge together at the bottom. Miles makes a careful sketch of the symbol in a notebook. Next the group investigates the broken display case. Tommy takes the lead using his skills as a thief. Tommy discovers that the case was broken by a large object. Inside only a jade artifact is taken. Other valuables in the case have not been disturbed. The closest rear door appears to be the sign of entry. It is smashed open at the door jam with something spherical in shape around the size of a basketball. At this point Miles, Mike, and Johnny ask Trubee about the stolen item. Trubee takes them into his office and gives the trio a folder with details on the artifact. The details include a picture and a brief history. The item is piece of a jade pendent roughly 6″ across and 1″ thick. The piece shows part of a claw and scaled tail. Trubee explains that the artifact is from the first reign of the first emperor. Legend has it that the amulet is a dragon’s heart ripped from an evil dragon on orders of the Emperor. Of course Trubee believe this to be “poppycock”. Miles goes back to the case and detects the presence of an ancient magic. While the trio are inside Tommy looks for a street person who may have seen something. After some searching he finds a homeless man on the front porch of the museum. With a bribe of a hot dog and some coffee Tommy get the man to relax and open up. The man explains that he saw three men break in through the back door late last night. One man was really huge and was carrying a large stick. He was wearing a “sheet” and had a large tattoo of a lion on his shoulder. The other two men where smaller and were wearing “pajamas”. As Miles is not an expert on Chinese symbolism the group decides to head over to a friend of Mike’s to get some advice.

Mike’s friend from the army, PFC Eddie Chang, owns a Chinese restaurant known as The Golden Bowl. After knocking on the back door Eddie emerges. To the surprise of the Corp he tells them that trouble follows Mike like a shadow and wants them to leave. After some convincing Eddie ushers them into the empty dining room and takes a seat. The group shows him the symbol from the notebook. Eddie says the symbol is that of an ancient Chinese figure called Lo-Peng. Lo-Peng is a sort of Chinese bogeyman that is used to scare kids into being good. The symbol means literally, “He who lives forever.” He does not know what the lightning bolts mean except that they are referred to as “Lo-Peng’s talons”. As he hands back the picture it floats out of his hand then erupts in green flame and smoke. In the smoke the group can vaguely see two green eyes! As soon as the eyes dissipate, ghostly Chinese warriors emerge from the floor and start attacking! Eddie and Johnny jump for cover while the rest of the group goes into combat. Quickly the group finds that the ghostly warriors are nearly immune to normal weapons and are only barely affected by Mile’s deadly spells! As Tommy tries to move Eddie to safety he yells to Mike that the Spirit Warriors are only affected by bamboo. With that advice Johnny grabs a bamboo display and throws sticks to Mike and Miles. Tommy starts throwing chopsticks at the Spirit Warriors to deadly effect. Mike starts using two sticks in a pounding flurry! Once they are all dispelled Miles reaches out with his mystical senses. He discovers that the Spirit Warriors were summoned and quickly looks out the front door. On the street he spots a Chinese man in a black trench coat moving quickly away from The Golden Bowl. He alerts the group and races off in pursuit. Johnny quickly gains the lead and chases the man over an alley fence where he sees him enter a martial arts dojo.

HEE-YA!

Inside the dojo the man running from the restaurant appears to be reporting to a huge bald man and a group of martial art practitioners. The bald man is wearing a toga like tunic, is carrying a huge club with a large metal ball on the end, and is sporting a tattoo of a lion! He must be the killer! With that Tommy enters the dojo and asks the men to surrender. The large man says something in Chinese then they all move in to attack. Tommy jumps up onto a shelf over the office, Johnny lets loose with a pellet fire blast, Miles cuts loose with lightning bolts, and Mike rushes in with brass knuckles! The large man takes some swings but luckily does not catch Mike squarely. Realizing that the large man is his better he pulls his pistols and opens fire. The big man known as Ti-Lung takes the shots but is a bit taken aback. He then casts a spell that raises stone armor around his torso and laughs deeply! Mike continues to fire but it is not having much effect now! While up close Mike notices a scroll case on Ti-Lung’s waist. He yells to Tommy to grab it. Johnny lights the building on fire but goes down when several martial artists group up on him. In the back of the room Tommy spots some fireworks. He jumps down, grabs the scroll, then tells Miles to shoot the boxes. When a lighting bolt hits the boxes of fireworks they go up in a huge explosion of flame and light! Martial artists and Ti-Lung fitfully try to dive-for-cover! The members of Tesla’s Power Core grab Johnny and beat a hasty retreat.

Behind The Buddha

The scrolls from Ti-Lung says the following:
I have located two of three parts to an ancient artifact known as the Jade Heart. With it I will be able to return to my former glory. One piece is located in the New York Metropolitan Museum. Another piece of the Jade Heart rests near the Buddha Of Bamyan. Shen-Lung will be attempting to obtain that piece. It is imperative that you, my powerful Earth Talon, recover the fragment in New York. Once you have the item I will contact you for its delivery.

With that the group decides to head to the Buddha Of Bamyan which are near Kabul in Afghanistan. After a flight to the area Miles rents a jeep and hire a guide. The group then proceeds to the Buddha. Along the way they enter a small village that is holding a kite flying contest. The say hello then carry on to the site.

At the site they find three stone Buddha which are roughly 30 feet in height. After doing some magical detecting Miles says to look behind the head of the center Buddha. With that Tommy climbs up to take a look. Behind the head he finds a small tunnel. At the end of a short shaft the young thief spies a wondrous room full of wooden planks suspended on chains. At the far side of the room is a golden chest…

The remaining talons of Lo-Peng lead the way for the deadly immoral emperor to restore his lost power. Can the heroic members of Tesla’s Power Corp stop him?!? Stay tuned and find out!!!

Session #7 – Daring Tale #4 – Treasure Of The Templars

October 02, 2013 By: John Taber Category: Daring Tales Of Adventure News, Games

Knights Templar[Author’s Note: This is the log for the 7th session.

  • Liam Clark – Heroic world traveler, linguist, and transportation ace.

Grave Robbers

After repairing Liam’s plane and flying to France our heroes trudge down into the bowels of the Castle Of Our Lady Of Mercy. After some searching they find an abandoned stairwell that leads into a room lined with statues of knights. At the end of the room is a statue of a priest with his hand up in prayer. Tommy searches the hallway and finds several stones that depress just in front of the priest statue. Johnny and Miles take a look as the area and determine that the walls on both sides look like they might move to the center of the room sealing it off. Tommy triggers a switch that he finds on the priest statue. This causes several knight statues at the end of the room to come to life! As they start to march down the hallway Miles cuts loose with a confusion spell that seems to temporarily confuse them. He then starts blasting at them with lightning bolts. Mike opens up with his twin Colts sending one up in a cloud of stone dust! Tommy places a steel bar between the walls to prevent them from sealing. After Mike fells the final statue with a punch from his brass knuckles the group decides to trigger the switch and let the walls close. When they close the floor drops out sending the group down a slide! Tommy catches himself and Johnny long enough that the weird scientist can apply glue to his hands and feet so that the pair can descend carefully.

At the bottom of the slide the group finds another room. This room contains sarcophagus down the left and right walls. At the end of the room there are three sarcophagus arranged on thick stone slabs. After sensing for magic Miles decides to open the one of the right. Inside he finds a silver medallion with writing in Latin that says, “My brethren have gone to the land of fire and ice, but this secret I take to the grave. While my brethren sailed away, I was left to guard the key to the great secret. I have done my duty. May God accept me into his grace. Amen.”

When Johnny finds no obvious way to leave the room he examines the other two sarcophagus. When Mike lifts off the cover he is surprised to find an older French gentlemen holding a Tommy Gun on him! The man confronts the group calling them, “Nazi devils!!!” After Miles quickly calms down the man he tells them that his name is Pierre de Molay. After a bit of questioning the group says that they were sent by the Templars to ensure that the treasure does not fall into the wrong hands. When Pierre asks to see their “mark” they admit to not being members but to be working for them. Still a bit nervous Pierre leads the group upstairs so that they can talk in a bit more comfort. At the top of the stairs he opens a strange stone lock then escorts the group into the courtyard.

To everyone’s surprise the courtyard is crowded with Nazi’s and flying overhead is a zeppelin! Leading the Nazi soldiers is the undying Mister Scar. After taunting the heroes he orders his men to open fire. At this point Tesla’s Power Corp jumps into action! Johnny uses his flame thrower to send several men screaming down the sides of the castle walls. Liam darts across the courtyard dodging gunfire to take out a couple more on the far wall. Tommy orders his spiders to attack some men while another falls to a deadly knife throw. Miles takes a shot then lets go with a lightning bolt on Mister Scar. The tough gumshoe, Mike Callahan, barks fire from his twin pistols sending soldier after soldier to their grave! Pierre fires back with a pistol. As the battle rages Miles shoots a massive lightning bolt at the zeppelin which causes it to erupt in a massive ball of flame! With the Nazis defeated the heroes examine the wreckage of the blimp. Even though the blimp went up in flame the gondola fell away as the blimp went up in flames. It is severely dented but relatively in tact! Inside the group finds the Captain with a broken neck from the fall. In his coat is a notebook with sketches and drawings. When the book is opened the silver Templar amulet pulls to a certain page. The page is a rough drawn sketch of a region of Iceland…the Land Of Fire And ice. With that the Corp members say goodbye to Pierre and the Templars.

Ice Castle Chaos

On Iceland the group gathers cold weather gear and heads into the mountains following the pull of the Templar amulet. It leads them to a majestic castle made completely of ice. After opening the doors with the amulet the Corp treads carefully inside. At the far end of the first pillar lined room are a set of double doors. As they approach the doors ripple with a faint blue glow. Emerging from the doors and walls behind the group are four strange ice elemental creatures! The group cuts loose with lightning blasts and guns but Johnny’s flame blast sends them reeling. Tommy warns Johnny about shooting the flame for fear of it weakening the pillars holding up the roof. After quickly taking out the creatures the group proceeds.

The next room is a large chamber with small alcoves containing books and scrolls of various origin. In the center of the chamber is a large round table with 13 chairs. On 12 of the chairs are skeletons wearing chainmail. On the chair facing the doorway a man in armor who stands to address the group. After convincing the knight that they are here to prevent the treasure from falling into the wrong hands he loosens up and explains the situation. He tells the Corp that his name is Sir Richard. He explains that six hundred years ago he became the guardian of the Templar treasure. The treasure is the documents around the room. They are the collected wisdom from now forgotten kingdoms. Sir Richard then acknowledges that the location of the treasures could not stay hidden forever.

As the group moves towards the shelves they hear a voice from the hallway with pillars. A Nazi commander named Sturmbanhfuhrer Heinrich Kempler enters the room backed by many soldiers. He compliments the group for finding the treasure then tells his men to attack! Again the group jumps into action! Johnny sends a flame blast down the hallway with the pillars taking out almost all of the Nazi soldiers! Miles and Mike blast away at Kempler. Liam takes out some stray soldiers with his pistol. With his men down and the castle structure weakened by flame attacks Kempler decides to beat a hasty retreat. Before leaving Johnny quickly sets up a sled using a table and two chairs. The Corp quickly gathers some random paperwork then moves quickly out of the castle as it collapses behind them!

In our next fantastic tale the heroes of Tesla’s Power Corp uncover a nefarious plot backed by an immortal force of nature who is on the verge of gaining world dominating power!

Session #6 – Daring Tale #4 – Treasure Of The Templars

August 29, 2013 By: John Taber Category: Daring Tales Of Adventure News, Games

Mechanical Snake[Author’s Note: This is the log for the 6th session.

  • Miles Ravenwood – Mysterious man-of-means with knowledge in all things arcane.

Auction Action

After dropping off the “modern” Knight Templar without his dirk the Corp returns to the hotel to speak with Professor Dickenson. To their surprise the Professor is nowhere to be found. After Mike asks around a bit he finds out that the doorman got a message from the Professor. The Professor’s message asks the Corp to look for something related to their trip to Paris in his house. The doorman also describes a man dressed in black with a limp and large black hat that left with the Professor.

At Professor Dickenson’s house Miles finds a picture from a trip they once took to Paris. Behind the picture is a note that tells Miles that he is being followed and fears for his safety. He then tells Miles to bid on lot 1307 in a local auction as it will have a clue to his investigation of the famed Templar treasure.

With that the group races to the auction house. At the auction house they find that lot 1307 is going up for auction. The lot is a small statuette of a knight mounted on a horse. When the auction begins the first bid is from a man dressed in black with a strong German accent. As Miles starts to bid against him Johnny and Mike move to the back of the room to watch him. He is seated with a large thug. As the bidding heats up Mike bumps into the man sending his paddle flying! As the man tries to retrieve it Johnny kicks it under some chairs. The two Germans stand up and start to move towards the front of the room to grab the statuette. Coming in from two of the doors are a group of thugs armed with submachine guns! With that the group jumps into action. Miles moves to the front of the room near the statuette then confuses the Germans. Mike lays into the large bodyguard with a right cross. Johnny moves toward the doorway gluing up the guards by one of the exits. As the guards fight to recover Miles grabs the statuette and races towards the exit. Mike does a flying tackle clearing the doorway for Johnny and Miles to escape. After grabbing the German with the black hat the trio jumps into their car and speeds off.

After interrogating the German they find that he is called Herr Templemann. At first he mocks the Corp members as he tries to gain information about them. The group stays quiet and eventually gets him to talk by threatening him with some mustard gas. Herr Templemann says that they are to late. He explains that at this very moment Professor Dickenson is being whisked off the Motherland. With that the Corp members race towards a small airport where the plane is supposed to be departing. Mike barges into the tower explaining that he is a G-Man and that he needs them to tell the airplane that they are leaking fuel and that they need to return. The man places the call. When the plane returns the Corp waits in a nearby hanger as Johnny meets with the pilot posing as an airplane mechanic. At that point Mike storms forward closing distance to the door of the airplane. Raising his arms and announcing his presence to the men on the plane acts as a distraction. This momentary distraction gives Miles the chance to confuse the men with his spell! Johnny decks the pilot while Mike yanks another out of the plane. As someone inside pulls a pistol Mike draws his Colts 1991’s and cuts loose in a hail of deadly .45’s. In seconds the Corp has Professor Dickenson in hand and speeds away to safety.

Inside the statuette the group finds a small marble that when held up to the light shows a simple picture of an Egyptian temple and a strange tower with three minarets on a hill. After some research the group finds that the Egyptian temple is not in any records but the tower is in the Sahara Desert southwest of Cairo. With that the group heads to Egypt.

Terror In The Sands

As the Corp closes on the tower a tremendous sandstorm kicks up. Liam’s plane Smaug bucks and the engines shut down the group makes a crash landing. After gathering what supplies were not damaged in the crash the group heads toward their destination. The group estimates that it will take 2 days to walk to the site. Miles uses a spell to make travel more comfortable as well as provide food and drink. After a day the group finds an oasis. While taking a short break they find themselves surrounded by armed Bedouins mounted on camels. The Bedouins address the group in Arabic then escorts them back to their camp.

The Bedouin camp is a small affair with only 5 or 6 tents and several camels. The trio is led to a large tent where they are greeted by a large Bedouin chief and his daughter Fatima. To their surprise the chief speaks perfect English with an English accent! He lets them know that he went to school in London and has only recently returned to the desert with the passing of his wife. When the group mentions the tower he offers to have some of his men lead them to the area but that they will not stay. He informs them that the locals have many legends about the area. Legends speak of legions of men getting swallowed by the sand.

Upon reaching the tower the Bedouins setup a few tents then leave the Corp to conduct the exploration. As they examine the marble they find the area where the temple should exist. To their surprise when the sun drops the ground begins to shake! Rising from the sand is a majestic temple. After searching the temple the group finds a doorway that opens with a hidden latch. Inside is a long dark staircase leading down.

At the bottom of the staircase is a massive chamber. The roof is lined with gold leaf and the walls are filled with hieroglyphics. At the far side of the room is a statue of the Egyptian god Thoth. A gold box rests at the feet of the status. Running across the room is a shallow stream. At the entrance to the room is a hieroglyphic message that says, “Let the Returned Eye be your passage to safety.”

While Miles and Mike start slowly walking towards the Thoth statue Johnny applies glue to his hands and feet and climbs along the ceiling. When Miles crosses the stream a huge mechanical snake erupts out of the water! It moves rapidly towards Miles who throws spells at the snake to little effect. Mikes fires at the snake knocking off some small plates but not severely hurting it. Johnny jumps on its head and tries to pry out his eye with a crowbar. After getting a close look he realizes that the missing eye is the exact same color and size as the marble that they found in the statuette. Acting quickly Miles and hands Johnny the marble. Johnny then slams the marble into the eye while the snake ferociously tries to buck him off. After replacing the eye the snake passively retreats into the water.

With that the group moves to examine the small gold box. After interpreting some of the symbols Miles carefully picks up the box. When the Corp trio turns to leave the temple they hear clapping then a strong Nazi voice, “You have saved me quite a lot of trouble. Now if you will please hand over the box.” It is Nazi Agent X back from the dead again! As his men come down the stair Johnny cuts loose on them with his flame pellet. Agent X and the Nazi soldiers vainly attempt to escape the inferno as they fall in a charred pile! With that the group leaves the temple and returns to their camp.

The next morning the temple descends again into the sand erasing all evidence of its existence. The Corp opens the box to find an ancient papyrus sheet that is surprisingly filled with Latin text. The text is from a Templar who has taken the treasure to a castle in France. The group heads to Cairo for airplane parts then flies off in Smaug towards France…

Where will the search for ancient Templar treasure send out heroic Corp?!? Watch the next session and the exciting continuation of this amazing tale!
